SUMCO, Sumitomo Mitsubishi Silicon Group Sumitomo is the third largest supplier in the world of Silicon raw material to the Semiconductor Industry with worldwide sales approaching a billion dollars annually. Silicon wafers are used by the Semiconductor Industry as the starting material in their "chip" manufacturing process. Sumitomo customers include all of the major semiconductor manufacturers in the U.S., Europe, Asia and Japan. In 1993 Sumitomo elected to locate our primary manufacturing center for eight inch diameter epitaxial wafers in Albuquerque with a view to expanding the facility to match the rapidly increasing market demand for both eight and twelve inch diameter products. This facility will account for the majority of the planned growth in sales for Sumitomo's silicon business in future years. More than 90% of our 150 employees were hired from within the state of New Mexico and we anticipate that this ratio will move higher as we continue to add people to support our growth. Sumitomo is an active supporter of the community through educational channels, helping local institutions match their workforce training programs with needs of the growing technology employment sector. The Albuquerque facility is very active in environmental preservation through creative water reuse programs and is the recipient of several clean air awards. Visit the Sumitomo home page |
