Ethicon Endo-Surgery Inc. (EESI) is an operating company of Johnson
& Johnson located at 3801 University SE in Albuquerque. Ethicon
Endo-Surgery Inc. corporate headquarters is in Cincinnati, Ohio.
The Albuquerque plant employs 700 people. Ethicon began operations
in July of 1981 with 64 people, as a suture manufacturing company,
Ethicon Inc.
In 1993 EESI split from Ethicon Inc. and Albuquerque transitioned
from being a suture manufacturing company to an endoscopic and
mechanical device manufacturing company.
The Albuquerque plant is also a worldwide packaging center for
EESI endo-mechanical products. EESI-Albuquerque expanded in 1996
to include a new sterilization unit. To accommodate the new unit
an expansion of 8500 square feet was added in addition to a renovation
to 10,000 square feet of the already existing square foot manufacturing
space. The expansion supports the Continuous Flow Manufacturing
philosophy, supports product line growth and enhances manufacturing
efficiency.
EESI is a market leader for single-patient-use instruments for
videoscopic surgery, or video assisted endoscopic surgery. Endoscopics
allow surgeons to view inside body cavities and hollow organs
by threading the instruments through body orifices. The are most
commonly used for gall bladder surgery. EESI also works with surgeons
to develop new procedures and related surgical devices.
